We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to join our corporate finance team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles and a passion for accuracy and efficiency. As an Accountant at Defense Unicorns, you will be responsible for various tasks including typical accounting functions such as accounts payable, expense management and bookkeeping, as well as payroll processing and payroll tax setup through our outsourced payroll and benefits provider..

Responsibilities: 
  • Purchase to Pay Management: Enter and manage purchase orders in the accounting system; confirm receipt of products or services; perform or ensure coding and approval of bills for payment;; and report on AP, open obligations and related metrics.
  • Expense Management: Review, code and process expenses from employee reimbursements and credit card transactions.
  • Project Setup: In coordination with the contract team, setup or ensure accurate setup of administrative contract information in the accounting system; and confirm revenue recognition schedule with senior department personnel and input into the accounting system.
  • Process Payroll: Using third party payroll and benefits providers,  process payroll twice per month and off cycle as required, coordinating inputs from other departments, ensuring compensation and benefits are accurate and timely.
  • Set up and maintain state payroll tax accounts, ensuring withholding and remittance of payroll taxes by a third party payroll provider.
  • Provide support during internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, by compiling and organizing transactional data.
  • Assist in month-end close activities, such as journal entries, account reconciliations and financial reporting.
  • Support the accounting and finance team in ad hoc projects and initiatives as needed.
 

Travel Expectations/Requirements: Occasional (less than quarterly) department or company gatherings.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
  • Experience in accounting roles, preferably with exposure to job-based accounting, government contracts, payroll processing and accounts payable.
  • Efficient in managing workload and meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Knowledge of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements is a plus.
